Couples Therapy - EFT
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy based on the science of emotions, attachment theory, humanistic psychology and family systems theory.
EFT is usually a short-term, structured approach to couples therapy. EFT was formulated in the early 1980s by Dr Sue Johnson and Dr Les Greenberg, initially to work with individuals. Since this time, Sue Johnson has developed the model further and it is now also used with couples and families.
The EFT approach uses theory and insights from attachment theory to understand how to move distressed couples and their interactions within a conflicted relationship to a couple who have attuned communication and who enjoy being emotionally connected as partners.
Experiencing conflict in relationships is to be expected and is quite normal. However, relationships suffer when couples lack the necessary skills for addressing inevitable issues, they then can get stuck and/or drift apart. With the help of an experienced couples therapist, partners can start to repair and strengthen their connection.
EFT focuses on the present time to make changes in the here and now. It provides a guide map for helping couples move closer and grow together, by learning a deeper understanding of each other and how to resolve relationship problems. EFT helps couples move from conflict and hurt in their relationship to a safer, more connected and fulfilling relationship.
Empirical research has supported the effectiveness of EFT, showing that 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery and about 90% show significant improvements (the best results of any couples therapy). The evidence shows that these positive effects last over time.
EFT is being used throughout the world with many different kinds of couples from many different cultural groups. These distressed couples include partners suffering from disorders such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorders and chronic illness.
